At Girls on the Run, volunteers keep us running. Volunteers serve as coaches, assistant coaches, junior coaches, program running buddies, committee members and day-of volunteers. They Call Me Coach!

 Enjoy the Girls on the Run® experience of receiving hugs, giving energy awards and developing self respect and empowerment in third through eighth grade girls. Your coach role will unleash your inner potential to prepare the minds of our youth, build positive relationships and free your positive energy. Join our movement towards establishing a healthier community by activating your coaching role. Please note that you do not need to be a runner to be a coach.  We train you, give you a curriculum to follow and support you throughout the experience.  The only thing you need is the willingness to support GIRL POWER!  


Our season runs 10 weeks in the Fall (Sept.-Nov.) and 10 weeks in the Spring (March-June).  Coaching opportunities include one or two days per week for 90 min. sessions during these 10-weeks.  We have positions for head coaches, assistant coaches and junior coaches (high schoolers 16 and older).

Upcoming Coach Training

We have two coach training opportunities for coaches who plan on coaching during our Fall 2016 season.  Please note:  Before you come to coach training you must have completed the coach application and have been contacted by our Program Coordinator.  All coaches must attend one of our training dates.

  1. OPTION #1--Wednesday, 8/10/16 , 6-9 PM, Bayshore Town Center
  2. OPTION #2--Sunday, 8/21/16, 12:30-3:30 PM, Bayshore Town Center
  3. CPR Training ONLY--Sunday, 8/21/16, 10 am-12 PM, Bayshore Town Center (CPR offered to one coach from each team, prearranged with Program Coordinator).

One Day Opportunities

Volunteers Needed to staff VIP tents for two events:

EVENT #1- Estabrook Half Marathon

Where:  Estabrook Park (by Beer Garden)

When:  August 27, 2016 from 7:30 AM-10:30 AM

What:  Cheer on runners, help with snack distribution, cheer signs

EVENT #2- Day 1 Lakefront Marathon Expo & Day 2 Lakefront Marathon

Where: Sat. Expo is at Italian Community Center and Marathon Finish is at  Veteran's Park

When:  Sat.., Oct. 1, 2016 from 8 AM-5 PM (shifts available) Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016 from 9:30 AM-Noon

What:  Staff Expo booth on Saturday.  On Sunday, cheer on runners, help with snack distribution, cheer signs

Need approximately 10 Volunteers each day.

Volunteers Needed to Help with 26.2 It!  Kid's Program

A Youth Running Program hosted by Badgerland Striders and supported by Girls on the Running.  Online running program with focus on FUN (designed for boys and girls ages 6-12).  10 weeks, weekly fun runs, final 1.2 mile run on Lakefront Marathon day, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016.

Where:  Various locations around Milwaukee

When:  Every Wednesday starting July 27- Sept. 28 from 6-7 PM

What:  Assist with group warm- up.  Run/walk alongside youth  during half mile/mile run.

Need approximately 4 volunteers for each Wednesday fun run.

GOTR’s committees help promote and support our organization in a variety of ways. Our volunteers work throughout the year, to market GOTR, plan events, plan the 5k and raise funds.  Most committees meet once a month at a set time. Marketing Committee

The Marketing Committee helps promote GOTR throughout Southeastern Wisconsin, as well as produce marketing, sponsorship, program and 5k materials. This committee is critical to spreading the word to volunteers, families and donors alike. The Marketing Committee works closely with the events, 5k, grants/sponsorship and volunteer committees to help promote GOTR.

Events Committee

The Events Committee plans GOTR’s major fundraiser of the year, which takes place in the winter/spring at Café 1505 in Mequon. It is an fabulous auction and wine and beer tasting event.  This committee has a wide variety of responsibilities in planning the fundraiser and provides a great opportunity for different skills and interests. The Events Committee is always looking for people excited about the mission of GOTR and ready to help raise funds to support our programs.

5K Committee

This committee manages all aspects of our 5k events in June and November. The 5k committee works closely with the marketing, sponsorship and volunteer committees to plan our two yearly races. Help us find vendors, plan the race course, request donations, prepare supplies, manage registration and more. The 5k committee also needs volunteers to stuff race packets and work the course on race day. The 5k Committee needs energetic volunteers to help plan and execute the highlight of the GOTR season.

 Grant-Writing & Sponsorship Committee

The Grant-Writing/Sponsorship Committee works on researching grant and sponsorship opportunities. The committee works closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to execute a strategic plan for these opportunities, which may including creating submission materials, submitting grant/sponsorship proposals or attending meetings for potential grants/sponsorships with the Executive Director or a member of the Board of Directors. Have a public interest, research or writing skill? Enthusiastic about GOTR and love to put together and present our story? Join us on the Grant-Writing and Sponsorship Committee!

Volunteer Committee

GOTR could not exist without our fabulous volunteers. The Volunteer Committee works closely with all of our committees, as well as with the Program Coordinator and Executive Director to coordinate volunteers. The committee helps find committee members, coaches, day-of volunteers and running buddies. The committee also hosts volunteer orientation events and promotes GOTR/volunteer opportunities to committee organizations.

 SoleMates Committee

Help our Fundraisers on the Run! SoleMates is the charity running arm of GOTR. Participants can raise money for GOTR by participating in any race of their choosing. Help us support our SoleMates by providing ideas/assistance for fundraising efforts, helping plan and support training runs, planning meet-ups, preparing Thank-You’s, tracking progress, and more!

Corporate & Group Volunteers

Board of Directors

We are actively recruiting for our Board of Directors.   A GOTR Board member must possess a passion for, and commitment to, improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades.  Board members will be committed to helping a young nonprofit spread its wings and reach more and more young girls in the Greater Milwaukee community.
